Pauly is a coffee composite seating solution that repurposes post-consumer coffee grounds into an ergonomic rocking chair. Designed specifically for cafés and co-working spaces, the chair adapts to users’ posture while promoting sustainability through a closed-loop lifecycle. After approximately four months of use, the seat’s seed-embedded bio-composite can be planted to enrich soil and grow herbs like basil or mint. The project involved developing and experimenting with the bio-composite’s formulation, understanding how ingredient variations impact material properties, and designing a form that complements the composite’s natural qualities. Pauly demonstrates the potential of coffee-based materials to transform waste into functional, biodegradable furniture, advancing circular design principles and material innovation in everyday objects.
