A RECTANGLE SHAPED SOUND

Inspired by Indian textile and craft, the collection acts as an archive of its own production. Sounds generated throughout the fabrication process are represented through a series of mordant block printed patterns placed on dotted grid systems on the fabrics. The systems draw inspiration from kolam, a traditional South Indian floor art practice drawn at the thresholds of homes and temples. Rajesh uses rectangular pattern-making on the textiles as a means of experimenting with composition of elements on the body and reducing waste. Natural dyes such as madder root, pomegranate, and indigo–all indigenous to India–were used to color the textiles. The collection culminates in seven looks that present materials used as observable records of their creation.
