BioBeads reimagines decorative festival beads using biodegradable materials to reduce the environmental harm caused by single-use plastics. Inspired by events like Mardi Gras, where plastic beads are worn and thrown by the thousands, this project explores how materials like chitosan and agar can offer a clean, compostable alternative. The process focused on achieving the form, color, and durability of traditional beads while replacing toxic ingredients with sustainable ones. The project balances aesthetics and function, producing beads that are colorful, drillable, and strong enough to wear. BioBeads offers a playful yet serious proposal for how cultural traditions can evolve through design, inviting celebration without compromise to the environment.
