ALGENOSPHERE

Algenosphere is a material system capable of purifying the air of its vicinity. Polycarbonate pillows are filled with cultivated algae, sustained through the turbulation of a ‘trompe’ pump system allowing for passive air filtration in urban structures. Each pillow is housed within a timber grid shell, supporting the weight of its contents while maximizing flexibility in form for the overall structure. The spirulina algae grown within the panels as a byproduct works as a revenue offshoot for the system due to its health benefits. Algenosphere demonstrates how material research rooted in coexistence and symbiosis with natural systems can mitigate anthropogenic effects on our environments.
