Churning Systems reimagines the relationship between sea, settlement, and community in Worli Koliwada, Mumbai. Inspired by the Hindu cosmic myth of Samudra Manthan, the project views the coastline as a site of continual transformation shaped by urbanization, ecological change, and the daily rhythms of the Koli fishing community. Through a modular and adaptive architecture, it restores the threshold between land and sea, creating shared infrastructure that supports fishing livelihoods, community life, and multispecies habitats. Structurally, bamboo forms the primary framework, algae-based bioplastic acts as a lightweight and translucent skin, and carbon-negative ferrock provides a durable foundation capable of withstanding coastal conditions. Together, these material systems support ecological restoration, resilience, and adaptability. Rooted in the philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — the world as one family — the project proposes a living architecture that embraces coexistence, adaptation, and collective stewardship of coastal environments.
