Slow Light
A lamp that requires a ritual to turn on.
Calling back to pre-electrical lighting, the Slow Light prompts us to engage with lighting in more intentional ways through satisfying mechanics. Lighting spaces once required considerable effort and purpose compared to the present day. Convenience has bred carelessness, overuse, and disconnection. The Slow Light challenges this dynamic by using ancient materials in its ritualistic activation. Hanging stones are placed on metal plates, closing the circuit of the scaffolded form. Each stone placed increasing the luminosity of the light housed within the bulging organic form. Lifting the stone, feeling its weight, and placing it becomes a small but meaningful practice in creating light. The use of stone as the material behind the activation of the light exemplifies the meaning behind the piece, an homage to an ancient practice brought into a more technologically advanced context.
