SLOW LIGHT
A lamp that requires a ritual to turn on.
Athos Argue-Hassanien’s Slow Light evokes the deliberate nature of pre-electrical illumination to challenge our contemporary disconnection from energy. The hybrid fixture contrasts raw, primitive matter with industrial, contemporary components to create an object that is at once ancient and futuristic. Rather than relying on the modern convenience of a light switch, Hassanien introduces a ritualistic, mechanical interface: loose stones are placed onto metal scales to close an electrical circuit, incrementally increasing the luminosity within an inflated light vessel. Slow Light presents a novel design concept that revolves around a unique haptic relationship to stone. By utilizing rocks as a functional switch, Hassanien elevates a heavy, natural material into an interactive catalyst for light, demonstrating how unexpected, tactile material combinations can disrupt and foster a deeper mindfulness toward our environments.
