WEAR PLASTIC

Wear Plastic, Corderman’s MFA thesis project, is part fashion collection, part satirical activewear brand, and offers a commentary on the irony of the health and wellness industry’s reliance on petroleum-derived synthetic materials. Adopting the visual language of modern fitness brands, Wear Plastic pokes fun at the contradiction between wellness culture’s concern for the ingredients we put in our bodies, and the relative lack of attention to the synthetic fabrics we wear against them. Selections from Corderman’s collection highlight how her interest in textile composition evolved through her coursework at Pratt, where conversations around waste, production systems, and circularity prompted her to look more critically, and examine what she calls the inherent “material tension” through her work. Rather than approaching her inquiry through conventional sustainability advocacy, Corderman uses the act of design itself as a form of material critique, making her position difficult to unsee, without becoming didactic.
