PETITION TO LEGISLATE ZERO WASTE FASHION DESIGN

This project imagines an ecosystem in which initiatives incentivize zero waste pattern-making through tax cuts, and a lottery system mandates large fashion houses with making zero waste collections for special shows, all meant to stimulate local economies through sustainable practice. Working within the framework of this speculative fashion-scape, Loh turns to cultural practices of zero-waste and frugality. Referencing the Chinese hanfu, deadstock denim was repurposed to create pieces representative of Loh’s Chinese American upbringing. Exploration began with folding origami lucky stars, using their folding patterns to inform direction and placement on the body. Grommets were introduced as a binder rooted in denim's material history, culminating in a latticed bodice and layered skirt. In crafting through the lens of a more optimistic fashion future, Loh invites reflection on purpose and intention in design practice.
