CHOSEN Food Pantry

Ellen Ren, Undergraduate Industrial Design with Art History Minor

CHOSEN rethinks the food pantry experience, making it more humane for people who need support. The design utilizes a systems approach utilizing technology to connect food donors, inventory systems, and food selection. Each item donated is registered in the system, creating an up-to-date list of available foods to an app. The food pantry both knows what it’s getting and can publish the available food to its clients, allowing them to pre-shop online. Volunteers can pre-pack CHOSEN bags, alleviating long wait times. The CHOSEN grocery bags are made by volunteers and clients from fabric collected by textile recycling companies, such as FABSCRAP, giving both a second life to the fabrics and a quilt circle-like activity to build community. This could potentially lead to small business opportunities, or teach clients skills for future careers such as sewing, thus improving the livelihood of clients.
